| Many Hands Makes Lights Win! |

A traditional Guernsey Town pub has got in touch with both its masculine and feminine sides to scoop two awards.
The Harbour Lights Guernsey was crowned overall winners in the hospitality category of this summer's Floral St Peter Port Parish Competition, shortly before clinching the Town Carnival tug of war. Manager and Licensee Kevin Williams, paid tribute to everyone involved: 'We're really delighted with both wins, which were all down to team work. The Harbour Lights has a very loyal following, which is more like a family. When we decide to do something we all pull together to make it happen.'
The pub's floral entry was based on a fishing theme and was co-ordinated by gardening enthusiast Penny Stockbridge. Ms Stockbridge said that the pub's regular customers were helping out: 'This is the fourth year that we've taken part and lots of regulars have become interested. They also help us to bring in the displays at closing time, which makes the job a lot easier.'
The Harbour Lights' flowers have inspired visiting gardeners, as Ms Stockbridge explained: 'Visitors off the cruise ships have admired this year's display and asked for cuttings. We're very happy to oblige and some have even travelled as far as Canada. It's nice to think that the Harbour Lights has reached out across the Atlantic'
Despite being overjoyed at the win, Mr Williams remained tight-lipped about next year's entry: 'We've already come up with a theme for 2010 but I can't say too much at this stage. It's still top secret.'
Mr Williams claimed that this summer's competition was marked by a fall in vandalism: 'There seems to have been a lot less damage to the displays in Town this year, which is encouraging. Perhaps more people appreciate the work that goes into them and are enjoying having them around.'
Despite a busy floral schedule, the Harbour Lights eight-strong Guernsey Tug of War team found time to defeat the Royal Bank of Scotland in this summer's Harbour Carnival final, after finishing runners up in 2008. Team captain and coach Peter Batiste said he was pleased with the result: 'We were well-prepared, we worked as a team and everyone gave one hundred percent. The lads did a terrific job on the night and the Harbour Lights will definitely be the team to beat next year.'

| GBG Magazine July 2009 - "Pure Gravy" - White d'Or |
 |
|
An invite for a group of girls
who haven't seen each other
for a while to enjoy a bottle
of champagne and try out
White d'Or's new improved
menu, proved a perfect
recipe for a perfect evening.
White d'Or has always had that special
touch and it just keeps going from strength
to strength. On arrival we were greeted by
a lovely smiley member of staff and were
looked after really well throughout the
evening.
Attention to detail at this attractive eatery is
superb. Glasses were filled up regularly and, even
though the restaurant was full to the brim, there
was no waiting around for food or drink.
The atmosphere and ambience at White d'Or is
beautiful and they really do pull out the stops to
keep we socialites happy. There is an extensive
wine menu and a short menu of cocktails if your
group is in the party mood!
Once seated in the lovely comfy leather sofas, we
had lots of catching up to do. In fact, we had so
much to say that we left it to the chef to choose
the menu. Our only request was for a selection
of veggie options and seafood and meats and he
certainly delivered what we asked for.
There was a beautiful selection from their new improved menu and the dishes were full of
favour. The new style grazing is such fun and
before you know it you are full. Then you take a
break and start eating again!
The dishes are served in installments so you
can really take your time and enjoy this grazing
concept.
My friend Amanda loved the meat patties baked
inside crisp pitta bread with a little spice. Sarah
loved the lamb skewers with mayonnaise dip
and described them as simply mouth-watering.
I must admit I loved every dish. Though I am not
normally a lover of lamb, I particularly loved the
Egyptian style fresh tabouleh, which is cracked
bulgar wheat, lemon juice oil and fresh parsley
served on a bed of small gem leaves. A simply
lovely creation and also very light to eat.
Sarah was in training for the island games so
decided not to drink but she couldn't resist a
small glass of champagne and why not when
you have all that energy to burn it off.
White d'Or is inspired by European cafe culture.
The chef adds new dishes regularly to the already
extensive menu.
It is a lovely place to go and spend the whole
evening, sat comfortably with lots of space and
great service. It is also perfect for a quick bite to
eat before your night on the town.
We girlies finished the evening off with a nice
hot cup of coffee and left totally content.
So get your glad rags on girls and book a table.
They do get busy, so it is advisable to book.
The only 'complaint' we had was that we ate far
too much and didn't leave room for the amazing
chocolate fondue dip, served with strawberries
or shortbread or marshmallows. Now that is
worth leaving a little room for and mark my
words, we will be back to try some!
